Pangden bag – Mustang Carryall

198.00

Handmade in Nepal

‘ Pangden ‘ is an apron made of wool that the Tibetan and Ethnic Tibetan women wear on the front of their dress as a symbol of marriage. These striped textiles are special and unique to the people living in the Himalayas.

Hand-loomed by the Himalayan mothers at their homes, passing the skills to their daughters, this traditional textile is usually made of goat wool from local herders. Women spend hours in front of their wooden loom, spinning back and forth until the final textile length is ready to make a pangden.

Description

Every Himalayan ethnic group have their unique design of colours and patterns for the pangdens with individual names in their local languages. Women wear pangden for its practical function around the house and in the fields. It provides warmth, a ready cloth for picking up hot pans from the fire or wiping clean her baby’s face, as well as a place to secure items like her sewing needle. Besides its practical functions, the pangden also reflects the beautiful aesthetics of the places these women live. The snow-white, the flowery reds and purples, the turquoise blue, and the deep tones of green, indigo, and black all provide a glimpse into the majesty of the Himalayas.

The Himalayan women show the beauty and talent of their people through the pangdens and other textiles they wear.

Together with our partner in Nepal – The White Yak, we are privileged to promote this wonderful tradition of the Himalayan culture. We hope our products and company honour these remarkable women and people.
